There once was a simple way to manage the archive of material collected during your university years. You wrote a paper, cited a few references, typed up your bibliography, and then threw the essay and articles into a box. After a couple of house moves, the box found its way to the bin.

Then along came reference management systems, such as EndNote. A marvellous desktop program for students and academics to store the details of articles they were referring to in their academic paper, adding footnote citations and producing a bibliography in the appropriate format.
